Cerithiopsis flava (C.B. Adams, 1850) is spread in the Caribbean region and
adjacent areas of Florida, Venezuela, Aruba, Curacao and Virgin Islands but, until
this moment, it had not been reported for the east coast of South America. We
have examined material of the family Cerithiopsidae from several Malacological
Colections such as: MORG: Museu Oceanografico de Rio Grande, IBUFRJ: Instituto
de Biologia da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, MZUSP: Museu de Zoologia
da Universidade do Estado de Sao Paulo, UNICAP: Laboratory of Zoology of
Universidade Catolica de Pernambuco, and MNHN: Museum National de Historia
Natural. The species Cerithiopsis flava, probably a grazer on sponges and algae, can
be characterized by slender conic shells with strong axial and spiral sculpture and a
diagnostic protoconch with about 6 whorls and a dark pointed tip. We present here
the first record of this species for Brazilian waters, where it occurs widely
distributed: Amapa, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro,
Sao Paulo and Santa Catarina. We have also detected a wider batimetric range than
previously reported in literature: from 1 to 175m.
